Beside Lisbon’s cathedral, you go down a flight of stairs, and it feels like stepping back two centuries, into the Lisbon where Fado was born. The room has an 11th-century stone vault, and its arches were part of the city’s medieval wall and its old sea gate. For 50 minutes, two Fado singers, a man and a woman, take turns singing, accompanied by a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar. The stone vault gives the room excellent acoustics. Before each Fado, the singers tell you what the poem says, in Portuguese and in English, so you can follow every line. Your ticket includes a glass of Port, Moscatel or Portuguese wine, or another drink if you’d rather not have wine. With no dinner served, the whole room is given over to Fado, and the singers have your full attention.
